Within the uncertainty of the current environmental and political climate, the garden becomes a place of hope and stability year after year. The warm dirt and leaves invite us to slow down and place energy into these ecologies that will provide food throughout the seasons. My work explores the multitudes of stories that entangle themselves like tendrils in the garden between plants, animals, bugs, and humans. Gardeners and plants alike become active agents in helping sustain one another’s futures. These natural spaces give me the hope that together, we can build our world into one that will support all members of the community, human and non-human, equally and with respect.

Hanna Dotzenroth (she/they) is a visual and conceptual artist living and working on Treaty 6 Territory in Beaumont, Alberta. Working in many mediums including painting, illustration, printmaking, and textiles, they are inspired by the rituals of tending to the garden and the sense of community that blooms from these shared spaces. They recently attended the BRAZZA artist residency in Chateauneuf-sur-Charente, France, and hold a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Art and Design from the University of Alberta. She now shares her work in various shops and art markets around the Edmonton area and is a private art instructor for young artists.
